The Heart of the Assessor: Sonya Murphy on Integrity, Legal Expertise, and Community Service
Business 101 | April 13, 2026
Attorney Sonya Murphy brings her bankruptcy law expertise and a lifelong commitment to service to the race for Shelby County Assessor.

For Sonya Murphy, the role of Shelby County Assessor isn't just a technical office—it's a customer service position with the power to protect or disrupt a family’s future. As a Tennessee-licensed attorney with deep experience in bankruptcy law, Murphy has spent years helping residents navigate the high stakes of asset valuation. She understands that a property assessment isn't just a number; it’s the factor that determines whether a mortgage remains affordable or whether a homeowner can build life-changing equity.

"Integrity is doing the right thing consistently," Murphy says. "Fairness is ensuring property values are balanced. You don't want taxes to skyrocket, but you don't want to lose the equity that allows you to refinance or sell."

Murphy’s platform is built on a foundation of transparency and "Innovative Ideas." She proposes a schedule of quarterly or bi-annual town hall meetings to ensure residents aren't left in the dark about macroeconomic trends or supply-and-demand shifts affecting their neighborhoods. Her goal is to move the office beyond a static government building and turn it into a hub of proactive communication.

A veteran of AmeriCorps and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Murphy’s family roots in Tennessee stretch back to the 1800s. Her "Personal Why" is deeply rooted in the memory of her mother and her experience as a full-time caretaker. "The most valuable thing we have is our people," she notes. Murphy aims to streamline the appeals process, ensuring that every homeowner who feels unheard has a clear, accessible path to be put on the docket.

"I have shown in my past that I am a humble servant," Murphy concludes. "These elected positions require someone who realizes that the heart of the job is serving the community."
