On Friday, April 25, 2025, the Memphis community will gather at the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Judge Donna Fields—a woman whose unwavering commitment to justice and animal welfare transformed countless lives in Shelby County and beyond.
A Life Devoted to Service
Judge Donna Fields’ journey was defined by her steadfast dedication to fairness, compassion, and the public good. Appointed to the 30th Judicial District Circuit Court in 2004, she brought decades of experience as a public defender and private attorney to the bench, serving with distinction and empathy. Her leadership and service were recognized nationally in 2005, when she received the Spotlight Award from the National Association of Women Judges, a testament to her outstanding contributions to the judiciary and her trailblazing spirit.
Champion for the Voiceless
Beyond her legal acumen, Judge Fields was known for her fierce advocacy on behalf of those without a voice—especially animals. Even after retiring from the bench in 2016, her sense of duty called her back. In 2022, she joined the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, focusing exclusively on prosecuting animal cruelty cases. Her return was not out of necessity, but out of an unyielding passion for justice and a deep love for animals.
“Judge Donna Fields was a relentless advocate for justice, especially for those who had no voice,” recalled District Attorney Steve Mulroy. “She didn’t have to return to work, but she chose to because of her deep love for animals and her steadfast commitment to justice”.
Her work was instrumental in landmark cases, including the prosecution of those responsible for the abuse of Riona, a dog whose story captured the hearts of the Memphis community and animal lovers nationwide. Judge Fields’ tenacity ensured that those who committed acts of cruelty were held accountable, and her efforts brought hope and healing to the most vulnerable.
A Lasting Impact
Judge Fields’ influence extended far beyond the courtroom. Colleagues remember her not only for her formidable legal mind, but also for her kindness, good humor, and ability to brighten every room she entered. Her presence was a source of strength and inspiration to all who worked with her.
Ellen Zahariadis, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County, summed up her legacy:
“Judge Donna Fields was a true champion for animals in our community. Her dedication to their welfare reflected the very heart of our mission, and we’re proud to honor her lasting impact.”
A Community Remembers
The upcoming ceremony, hosted by Hollywood Feed, the Humane Society, and the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, is more than a memorial—it is a celebration of a life lived in service to others. Judge Fields’ example continues to inspire new generations of advocates, reminding us all of the power of compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice.
As Memphis gathers to honor her memory, Judge Donna Fields’ legacy endures in every life she touched, every animal she protected, and every act of kindness she inspired.
